Planning (movie trailer)

The Idea

Before we begin to go out with our video camera and take video shots we need to know exactly what our trailer is going to be about, the idea behind it. Once we have decided the plot of our trailer we can then begin to look at the locations, camera shots used, actors etc. Looking back at my research the idea will have to contain elements of a thriller/paranormal genre.

We have come up with three initial idea, which we will then choose and allocate one of them to use for our project.

Idea 1

Idea 2

Storyboard for Idea 2

I will now need to plan out our storyboard. This will help us to define our idea and begin to look at the different elements we need to look at, including locations, camera shots used, actors etc.

This displays shots one to six within our storyboard. The six scenes include:

1. The first scene shows when the guys are playing football and shows when one of the guys score a goal. Shots used are a Match-on-action shot of the person scoring, a mid shot of the goaly trying to save the ball.

2. The second scene shows when one of the guys looks up and notices the clouds getting darker. Shots used are a mid shot, low angle.

3. The third scene shows when freakish lightning begins to strike the ground behing Kennan, this progresses towards him and strikes him to the ground. Thue guys then run away frightened whilst the lightning is following them. Shots used are a long shot to show the lightning behind Kennan coming closer, POV as one of the guys looking at the lightning then it hitting Kennan, remaining a POV shot, the guys run away looking back and the lightning is following them.

4. The forth scene shows Kennan after he's been hit by the lightning. We first see his eyes closed then open, similar to that in Twilight Breaking Dawn: Part 1. Shots used are an extreme close up of his eyes opening.

5. The fifth scene we see  him get up looking dizzy and confused. Shots used include a Mid shot of him getting up looking confused, a long shot will show a mysterious light in the distance, the source is hidden behind some trees.

6. The sixth scene shows when Kennan looks up and sees a casual walker with a beam of light coming from their chest. Shots used are a Mid shot of Kennan and a Long shot of the dog walker.

This displays shots seven to twelth withn our storyboard. The five scenes include:

7. This scene shows when Kennan, Kiera, Bolt and Zane are talking in a cafe about his experience involving the lightning and the special ability he's now obtained. Shots used include a long shot of all the characters sitting down. A Mid shot is then used when a character is talking, the mid shot is used to show both characters on their side of the table. The camera then flips around when the characters on the opposite side talk.

8. This scene shows when Kennan looks out of the window at the girl crossing the road when he notices her life line stops in the middle of the road. Kennan looks and notices a car speeding down the road out of control. The shots used are a mid shot of Kennan to show him looking out of the window and a Long shot of the girl looking out of the window.

9. This scene shows the incoming car speeding down the road towards the girl. From the camera perspective the car is heading straight towards us, the camera is acting like a POV from the girls perspective. The shots used are a Match on action shot to show what Kennan was looking at out of the window.

10. This scene shows the girl looking petrified at the incoming car. The shots used are a close up of the girls face to help show the girls emotional state at this point in time. We clearly see she is frightened.

11. This scene shows Kennan as he plummets to the ground is anger and disappointment, he was set out to save her. The shot used is a long shot of Kennan and Bolt as Bolt tries to restrain his anger.

12. This scene shows the psyciatrists assistant showing Kennan to the psyciatrists office. We then see Kennan sitting down opposite the psychiatrist. The shots used are a dolly shot following Kennan and the assistant walking down the corridor towards his office. Then a behind the shoulder shot behind Kennan showing the psychiatrist talking to Kennan as they reach his door. A behind the shoulder shot again is used to show Kennan talking to the psychiatrist.

13. This scene shows the bad guy, The Shadow in the rain on a street corner. We then see the Shadows ear with a phone held against it talking about to a mysterious person about Kenna, referring to him as 'The Boy'. This scene aims to introduce The Shadow to the audience. The shot used is a long shot to show The Shadow on the street corner. A close up I then used to show him talking on the phone, we can see the whole side of his head in the shot.

14. This scene shows Kennan with his girlfriend Keira in Keira's livingroom. In this scene she tells Kennan how she doesnt want him to get hurt. The shots used include an over the shoulder shot, the camera being behind Kennan as Keira talks to him.The second shot used is a mid shot of Keira and Kennan hugging.

15. This is the start of all the action scenes within the movie trailer. The action scenes include a dark road, a dark forest, an alleyway and the edge of a building.

16. This scene is down a dark road, Kennan walks down middle of the dark road casually. As he hits the corner, The Shadow runs out to attack him. Kennan runs back the way he came. The shots used include a track, to view Kennan whilst hes walking down the road, the track will show The Shadow hiding on the corner behind a wall. A mid shot of The Shadow as he jumps out of the corner. A long shot to show when Kennan runs back dodging the attacks. A special effect will be incorporated, The Shadow fires a thunder bolt at Kennan and hits the camera.

17. This scene is based in a dark forest. The scene is when Kennan hides away from the Shadow in some trees. Shots used in this scene include a POV of Kennans view looking through two confined trees towards The Shadow. The shadow then walks behind one tree and doesnt come out the other side. A close up is used to show the shadow at Kennans side.

18. This scene is based in an alleyway. The scene is when Kennan is chased down an alleyway by The Shadow. The Shadow is seen to extend his arm to grab Kennan. The shots used are a POV/ long shot as The Shadow chasing Kennan. A behind the shoulder shot is used to also show the hand nearly get Kennans shoulder. A strobe light effect or flashes will be used as the hand gets closer to help build tension.

19. This scene is based on top of a building, in particular the edge of a building. Shots used are a Long shot of Kennan and The Shadow. A behind the shoulder will be used to show The Shadow approaching Kennan.

Scene changes

Within the cafe scene, we have decided to change this to a scene where Kennan is looking up on the internet what his special powers are and where they have come from. We will be producing a scene similar to that in Kick Ass and Knowing.

Storyboard for Idea 2

Camera Shots

When it comes to taken photos you don't just take random shots as they might not give you the effect you are looking for and you may think why this is. this is especially important when it comes to producing a movie trailer, if you don't include the right ammunition of shots you won't achieve the desired effect to lure and capture the audiences attention. Therefore its best to plan your camera shots before you take them.

There are six camera shots that are thought when it comes to filming or even taking a photograph, they include:

Extreme long shot: For example a landscape.

Long shot: For example the entire body of a person.

Medium shot: For example from the waist up on a person

Close up: For example the face of a person.

Extreme close up: For example the eye of a person

Here is some examples of different camera shots in movies:

This shot of Ryan Reynolds in the Green Lantern movie and me in a Mid shot. A Mid shot presents the subject in more details while still giving an impression of the entire subject. A mid shot is from the waist up. They help to display facial expression helping to emphasise emotion of the subject in the photo and reveal body language.

These shots are close ups. Close up shots present detail of the subjects face rather than the scene. They are useful in capturing emotion within the subject's face.

These shots of Mark Wahlberg and Ted and then me are called long shots. This shot refers to the subject being displayed in full view, the audience can see their entire body. This reveals body language and expression. This shot isn't useful for displaying emotion because the facial features aren't entirely clear, as with a close up or extreme up.

Camera Angles

Just like with camera shots you also need to consider camera angles when it comes to taking a photo. There are several angles that exist all bringing a different feel to a photo. The way that the camera is positioned has a big impact on the way that the audience perceives the photo.

High angle shot: This is a shot that is positioned higher than the subject. This gives the impression that the subject isn't important, that the audience are of higher status.

Low angle shot: This is the opposite to a high angle shot. The camera is positioned lower than the subject. this gives the impression of domination and power.

Eye level shot: with this shot the camera is positioned eye level with the subject. This has no effect on the viewer, it would feel like they are in a neutral conversion.

Point of view shot: This shot shows the audience the perspective through the characters eye.  This particular shot is good for getting the audience involved and to feel apart of the shot.

Another example of a POV shot used in a music video, the entire music video is shot through the eyes of a protagonist.

Aerial shot: These shots are usually used to establish a scene or at the end of the film, to give the audience the idea that they are leaving the setting. usually done with a camera attached to either a crane or special helicopter.

Rule of thirds

When planning for the type of framing were going to use it is an essential requirement for us to consider the rule of thirds as a type of framing needed to create the perfect shot. The principle for this type of framing is to split up a shot into thirds and then cut again horizontally through the middle to produce 9 equal sectors.

The idea is that you place the 'points of interest' along the intersections and along the lines of the grid, which in theory will allow the shot to become more balanced and the viewer will be able to view the shot in a naturalistic way. Studies have shown that when viewing photos, the viewers eyes usually go to one of the intersection points most naturally rather than to the center of the shot. Some examples of this rule used in every aspect of photography include:

Heres some examples that I myself have gathered. They have been taken to test out the rule and to see the effect it creates within the photos I have taken. They are:

Within this photo I took of a watering can on a balcony I have placed the watering can on the top left intersection. I wanted to see the effect that placing a focal point on an intersection would have on the viewer. This placement immediately draws my eye to the watering can because as the idea states, the focal point is where the viewer would tend to look first. The photograph itself looks professional and lacks the amateur look some of my photos continue to carry with them.

This is a photograph I have taken of the view from the balcony. I have tried to focus on the effect the horizontal lines on the grid have on the viewer if a focal point is placed on top of them. I have purposely placed the horizon and division of the sea and the sky inbertween the horizontal line to see the effect. I feel their is a nice balance between the sky and the landscape that captures both a balance of light and a feel of calm and ease. This photograph looks more proffessional due to the balance created and the alignment of the focal point of the horizon.

Depth of field

This refers to the distance between the closest and furthest area from the camera which is in focus. This can be altered by adjusting the lens aperture. The depth of field is important to consider as it can help to get the audience to focus on nothing specific in a particular frame. For example if there was a character in the background and a character in the foreground, but the director wanted to direct the focus on the character in the background, then they could simply adjust the lens aperture so the character in front was blurred and only the character in the background was in focus. This can also be adjusted so the attention is flipped to the character in the foreground.

Video Editing

When the filming is all complete we will then be entering the post production stage. During this phase we will begin to take the video footage we have collected and begin to assemble it together. We will include many editing techniques to make the end result look proffessional and of an industry standard. Here is a look at some of the different editing techniques we could use:

Cut: The splicing of 2 shots together. this cut is made by the film editor at the editing stage of a film. Between sequences the cut marks a rapid transition between one time and space and another, but depending on the nature of the cut it will have different meanings.
Cross-cutting: Literally, cutting between different sets of action that can be occurring simultaneously or at different times. Cross-cutting is used to build suspense, or to show the relationship between the different sets of action.
Jump cut: A type of Cut where there is no match between the 2 cut shots. Within a sequence, or a scene, jump cuts give the effect of bad editing.
Continuity cuts: These are cuts that take us logically from one sequence or scene to another. This cut serves to move the narrative along.
Eye-line matching: A term used to show a look or gaze.

Software used for video editing

When the filming is all complete we will then need to piece the scenes together using specific software designed for editing purposes. There are many different video editing software to choose from, which all serve different layouts and formats and some are easier than others. Here is a list of different possible video editing software that we could use:

1. Serif Movieplus X6

2. Sony Vegas Pro 8

3.  Apple Final Cut Pro X

All these different products are produced by very different brands and therefore have there own unique styles about them. This makes them individually different and therefore individually challenging to use. I have recently purchased a MacBook Pro and with the laptop came Final Cut Pro X, i have experimented a lot with the software and have found some good tutorials on YouTube. This is a screenshot of what the interface looks like.

The interface is simple and clearly layer out. This will make it a lot easier when it comes to editing the video clips we have gathered whilst filming. The clips will be jumbled and its the post production process of video editing that pieces them together into a logical order. Costing around £199, this piece of software will serve the purpose of assisting us into piecing together our clips into a professional looking movie trailer, LifeLine.

Plugins

Plugins are separate add ons to a particular software that allow the user to perform new functions that they couldn't achieve with the original software. The software that I will be adding logins too will be Adobe After effects CS6. Plugins include:

Trapcode particular: This particular plugin is used in Adobe After effects and can be used to create light streaks, flares, anything that has an aspect of light it can help you to adapt and create. This would be helpful to create the life line that we need to project from peoples chests within the movie trailer.

Here is a link to the website to view the plugin:

https://www.videocopilot.net/proshop/plugins/trapcode_particular/

Trapcode shine: This plugin creates high intensity light streaks that can be used for many post editing tasks and projects. The package contains 22 presets that we could drag into our project and use instantly or we could start from scratch. This plugin may be helpful to create light effects that can be used on some movie titles to make them look visually stunning.

Mise En Scene

Mise en scene is an expression used to describe the different design aspects in theatre and movie production. Looking at the cinema side to Mise en scene there are different elements that we need to look upon, all of which appear in front of the camera. These different aspects include:

  • Composition: This is the arrangement and placement of the visual elements in the shot. Here we look at everything that is involved within the shot and whether or not the positioning looks good or is out of place. This will be a very important element to consider when we begin to start filming our shots for our movie trailer. We will be filming a lot outside in the urban environment, which predominantly means we will have to take the urban structures into consideration within the shots. For example we won't want any buildings in our shot if we are trying to draw in the emotion of happiness because these tall structures may begin to elope different emotions into the shot that we don't want to erise. We will need to control this element as much as possible.

  • Props: Props are as much of an important element as the character themselves. The prop can tell the audience a lot about the scene or character depending on the position or whereabouts it is in the shot. For example if a character was holding a prop such as a bunch of roses, we can depict a lot about the scene from the flowers themselves by looking back at past experiences or looking at the connotations of that particular flower. For example if the character is holding a bunch of lilies we can only take the connotation of lilies as being death and then know the scene can only be an event such as a funeral or the passing of a someone close to the character. If the character were to hold a bunch of roses, with the connotation being love and romance we can only assume the scene to be based upon love, maybe an anniversary of the character etc. We will need to take into consideration the props we use in our scenes because they will help us to tell our audience about a scene without showing a lot, which is what movie trailers try to do because of the lack of time available to show everything.

  • Actors: This element is extremely important in modern day movies because the way the actors/actress acts can make or break a movie in terms of realism, professionalism and engagement. It is a requirement of the actor to bring forward the character in themselfes to help move along the story and to bring it to life. The amount of emotion displayed will result in a different response within the audience in terms of an emotional response more than the a physical response. The emotional response of the viewer if engaged is what will have the greatest impact when it comes to remembering a scene. The depth in which the scene scars into the audiences mind depend on how good the actor/actress was at engaging the emotional side of the audience. This is why it is extremely important to have a well known actor/actress that you know will deliver so that the story of the movie gets brought to the life to the best of its ability and that the audience will remember. Because we weren't given a budget in which to hire actors and actresses that we knew would act out well in our movie trailer, we had to rely on peers and friends to take part. We could have used the drama students within our movie trailer, but because we had to travel to Southampton in some of our scenes we wouldn't have been able to afford travel expenses for them and decided to keep it between ourselves. The only flaw with using ourselves as actors for our movie trailer is the level of inexperience we carry when it comes to acting. We had to reshoot many times due to the fact we couldn't take ourselves seriously and kept laughing uncontrollably, this may have also been nerves taking over.

  • Costumes: The costume element is also very important to consider when it comes to movies, especially movies that are trying to recreate a different era, such as the Victorian era or the Roman etc. If there was a noticeable flaw in the costume design of a character from a war movie such as Gladiator, the movie would immediately loose its credibility as being realistic and audience engagement is more than likely to deteriorate. Therefore there is no room for a wardrobe malfunction or the entire movie could be ruined. The costume can also tells the audience a lot about the scene and more importantly the costume can tell the audience about the character themselves. Within our movie trailer we are basing it around the life of teenagers, which would be pretty easy for us to control the costume element because we would know exactly what to wear as we do everyday. We will need to pay careful consideration to the costumes of other characters such as the psychologist who will need to wear formal clothing to look professional and realistic.

  • Lighting: This element is extremely vital when we start to think about how different emotions are arisen from different lighting used within a shot. There are two different lighting techniques that are predominantly used by directors within movies. These two types include High-key lighting, which is often seen within romantic or comedy movies. The idea here is to eliminate as much darkess within a shot as possible so it looks bright with very little shadow. We are focusing on a genre that deals with negative emotions, so we can't afford to use this type of lighting due to the fact it may steer our movie trailer towards the positive side. The codes and conventions that the audience will have seen from existing movies will be carried forward and expected to see in our movie trailer and bright lighting will not be on the agenda. The second type of lighting used is Low-key lighting, which is often used in horror/ thriller movies and compromises of both dark and light areas within a shot. The chiaroscuro (italian for light and dark) technique is demonstrated by use of strong contrasts, which are steered to have the effect of unnerving the audience. The use of both dark and light lighting can be used to create many effects within a shot, especially within horror/thriller movie trailers as the lighting can be used to represent multiple emotions within a character. This type of lighting is perfect to use within our movie trailer as it it commonly used in creating dark emotions within characters. The Shadow in particular would suit from this type of lighting as we can represent his evil side through the use of these dark areas within the shot. We may also use the effect on Kennan by illuminating half of his face and suspending the remainder in the shadows. This effect is used to present two different sides to a character, but within Kennan I want to show his good side whilst howling a side of anger towards the Shadow, his villain.

Different lighting techniques

When it comes to lighting in a shot there a different techniques that are used to help to achieve the director capturing different effects in his shots. These various techniques can turn a standard shot into a high quality professional shot.

Hard Lighting

  • Hard lighting describes the type of lighting in which the shadows are clearly defined. Shadows play an important role in shots as they present mystery within the character and are very good at presenting the "Villain" as the darkness in the shot keeps the character in a vale of darkness, the audience can't see the surrounding environment.

Soft Lighting

  • Soft lighting creates a more illuminated effect within the shot. Soft lighting can also soften the hardness of specific characters to create a positive emotional response to them in the audience. Soft lighting is used in reverse to hard lighting and helps to bring out the positive in characters rather than the bad. Soft lighting embraces the positive, spiritual side to a character.

Frontal Lighting

  • Frontal lighting trys to eliminate all the shadows in the shot. The end result appears as though the 3-Dimentional look to the character has been striped away and the character is left with a simple 2D look to it. This shot presents a character in a very natural way. There is know where for the character to go and the audience is left with the character standing directly in front of them as if to say "Here i am". The natural and positive nature of the character is embraced in the shot, an equilibrium atmosphere is present due to the lack of shadows in these types of shots. These shots are commonly used during a spiritual scene or a scene where the perception of heaven is present.

Side Lighting

  • Side lighting attempts to capture the opposite of frontal lighting by presenting the 3-dimentional figure of a character. The effect of this is that the character is presented in darkness and light at the same time. This helps to give the idea that the character has a good and a bad side, the dual personality is reflected with the light and the dark. The facial features of the characters are clearly defined allowing the audience to clearly see the characters emotional state.

Backlighting

  • Back lighting try's to provide a greater feeling of depth by making the object or character of the film stand out against a slightly blurry background. This lighting technique can create feelings of the environment over powering the character. Backlighting also helps to create a sense of disorientation of the character in the scene.

Under lighting

  • Underlighting is light that comes from below the subject. Underlighting is used effectively to produce scenes of thriller/horror. Shadows are formed under the facial features giving an eerie, uncomfortable feeling of the character. This type of lighting can make a character appear evil and sinister. A disequilibrium is quickly established with this type of shot.

Key Lighting

  • Key lighting has no side lighting to form the shadows and so a face can appear as a cloud of white in the darkness surrounding it. The key light provides exacting illumination of the subject and is used to make an object or character stand out and become the focus of a shot. This type of lighting works well with fill lighting.

Fill Lighting

  • Fill lighting is used to soften the shadows produce by key lighting. When fill lighting is used with backlighting, it can produce a striking image of a dark character within a dark setting.

Silhouette Lighting

  • Silhouette lighting creates dark, strongly outlined silhouettes against a bright background. This is an effective technique for introducing unknown characters to the audience.

Planning of locations

This planned arrangement of where were going to film our scenes will help us to become organised and  to get together the necessary things we may need to get to the location. For example one of our locations is in Southampton, for us to get to the location we would need to plan what time we will meeting. This couldn't be too late as it takes an hour to get to Southampton and we would need to leave enough time to get to our location and film everything before it gets dark and to leave enough time to get home at a sensible time.

Locations

Within our idea there are numerous locations that we will need to film in order to capture the shot desired. This means we will need to consider places we know that we could film in that match the scenes within our storyboard. now looking at our storyboard we will need to consider these locations:

1. A playing field. This will be to film the scenes where the guys are playing football, then when he gets struck by lightning, when he wakes up and sees the dog walker with the beam coming from his chest.

2. A cafe. This will be to film the scene when the main guy talks to his girlfriend and friend about his new ability, also when he notices the girl about to cross the road with her life line ending in the middle of the road.

3. In a road. This is to film when the girl gets hit by the car and the car coming recklessly down the road

4. In a psychologists office. This is to film when he sees a psychologist who explains his ability

5. A dark street at night. This is to film the bad guy standing in the street shadows.

6. His girlfriends living room. This is to film the scene where his girlfriend tells him she doesn't want him to get hurt

7. A sequence of action scenes ( alleyway, a dark road at night, edge of a building, forest )

Even though all these scenes could be shot in our home town, we may branch off into cities such as London to help make the movie trailer seem more professional rather than amateur. We have to consider the constraints of this however, including the cost of transporting all the actors, actresses and cameramen and the cost of accommodation.

We considered London to film some of our shots, but after we thought about it properly we decided that London would actually be quite expensive to travel too due to the cost of accommodation and transport, and will take up a lot of time due to the time it takes to get there. We looked at closer destinations that we could film some of our scenes and we have chosen Southampton. Southampton is much closer to Poole than London and is a lot cheaper to get there.

We visited Southampton and had a look around to see if there were any suitable locations we could capture some of our shots. Some of the scenes we are aiming to capture in Southampton include the end edge of he building scene, long dark road.

We started off by looking around for an area that has an open top area that could be used for filming our building edge scene. After looking around extensively for the best possible filming area that was accessible to the public, we could only find one possible area that wouldn't require permission or difficult to access, West Quay car park at the summit. The photographs below are the ones we took on the location.

This photograph was the first photgraph we took on top of the car park. This establishing shot gives an overview of Southampton, in particular the Premiere Inn. This shot gives us a feel of what surroundings could possible be in the background when it comes to filming the scene. The surrounding buildings are a good view and are typically associated with an urban environment, which is what we want to give the feel of.

This long shot shows the area that we will be filming in. The area is safe from any dangers and no precautions will be nessessary. The top of the car park is empty, but we will need to be careful when it comes to cars parking. On the day of taking the location shots there were no cars parked on the top level. This may have been because we took the shots on a quiet day and at a calm time in the morning, around 10.30. We may have to bear this is mind if we wanted there to be no cars in the shot, but if we wanted to give it a real feel of urbanicity then we may consider filming at a time when cars will be parked.

This establishing shot shows a view from over the reiling on the left side of the car park. This shot shows a typical urban roundabout. We could use show this in our trailer to help emphaise the feel of an urban environment if the surrounding buildings werent enough.

This photograph is also taken over the reiling on the left hand side of the car park. This photo shows a large office building situated next to the roundaout we took a photo of earlier. The fact that we have the building in view on the previous photo means we could eliminate it from the trailer. This is something wel need to discuss when it comes to editing our movie trailer.

This photograph was taking from the edge of the car park looking directly towards the other side of the car park. This is the view that we hope to capture when Kennan is faced with The Shadow. Kennan, the protaginist will be against the building edge, whilst the antagonist has blocked him off and is coming towards him. This shot works quite nicely as we get a feel of being trapped with the concrete wall to the right showing the car park edge. This shot again also helps to show us what space we have to work with and how we can adapt to the environment? or how we can use the space effectively?

As we finished taking photogrpahs on top of the car park for our edge of the building scene we headed down the stairwell to the exit. On the way down the stairwell we noticed a magnificiant view from outside the window. These are the pictures we collected:

This photogrpah shows a giant building that is used as an exit for the cars to proceed down towards the exit. The giant sculptures architecture is stunning and provides a positive feel about our chosen locations urban architecture. This shot could be used to help show the audience the height that Kennan and The Shadow are. This may also help to eleveate the feeling of danger, but may also help to bring  the action out within the genre. Large buildings, and great heights are mostly associated with action thriller and we could display the large buildings to emphaise this.

This photograph was taken from the railing located inside the stairwell, leading down towards the exit of the car park. This shot is an establishing shot of the surrounding environment, the audience can get a clear idea that this is based in a city just with the shear amount of cars and the size of the roundabout and surrounding building.

This is a close up of a building outside the window. This mid shot also helps to show the surrounding environment and features that exist within the urban environment.

As we continued to follow down the stairwell we got to the bottom and found an unusual room that looked abandoned and derilict, the end of the room was closed off by a gate and looked like it was once some sort of hide out, we were fortunuate enough to get some pictures. We havent got a scene in our trailer that this room would be suitable for, but it may be useful if we were to add extra scenes. Here are the photos we took:

This photograph shows the enteance to the concrete cabin we stumbled across at the bottom of the stairs. We felt this room had a very eiry feel about it and something that could be associated with the Paranormal/Thriller genre.

In this long shot of Jordan (Kennan), we get a feel of entrapment, that there is no where we can go. This room will be used as another scene when Kennan getting chased by The Shadow. This location is effective as the concrete walls surround the room and give it a damp feel to it and a place where no one can escape or hear you scream. We will need to consider the Mise en scene when it comes to filming. We will need to assenble an effective costume that clearly shows the Shadow as the antagonist and Kennan as the protagonist. This will be done by the correct choice of colours, lighting and camera shots and angles.

This photogrpah shows what lies at the end of the concrete room , a large, locked metal gate that prevents anyone from leaving. At night this will be quite effective as we could see Kennan attempting and struggling to escape, which we will build on the disequilibrium atmosphere that we will aim to create.

To the left of the metal gate we can see the corner of the room, the corner is damp and looks like it could help deliver a negative feel to the room. We could include this in the trailer to build on the negative atmosphere and to help the auience get an  overll view of what the room looks like.

We turn around from the gate and we are faced with a long shot of the entire room we will be working in. There is plenty of space to set up nessassary equipmenthowever there is no plug sockets for any electrical powered lighting so we will ned to consider this carefully when it comes to deciding what lighting we will be using. We will also need to decide on whether to film this scene in the day time or at night because this will affect our lighting needs.

As we walked through Southampton with the intention to find a long narrow road that we could use to introduce the antagonist, we came to an agreement that we could not find a suitable road. I then thought of a road in Poole, Westbourne that would be suitable. The road is a long narrow stretch that has trees overlooking the road on each side, which creates an earie feel to it. We visited there at night, which is when we wanted to capture the film for the introduction of the antagonist. Here are the images we collected:

This photograph taken is a long shot of Jordan (Kennan) standing across the road under a street light, he is representing the scene where the audience is first introduced to the Shadow. He is shown under a bright street light, but kept slightly in the shadows o hide his identity. The choice of costume, the way he's introduced and the sound accompanying the scene will present to the audience that he is the villain in the movie trailer. This shot works well as the light is only used to illuminate the Shadow and the bush behind him, this helps the audience to see clearly that its a typical street without us having to place anymore objects within the shot. When it came to filming we were coming against many objects in the road such as postbox's, bins etc, which we didnt want to capture in our shot. We feel that these arent nessarary and may be a distraction to the audience and take the focus of the main character in the shot. We will also need to focus on the rule of third when it comes to taking our shots as this will help to draw the audiences attention to whatever i place in specific parts of the frame.

This photogrpah is similar to the previous photo, however the Shadow has been placed in the centre of the shot bringing all the attention of the audience to him. This is completely nessessary in order to make him get noticed quickly with no distraction from any other objects around him in the shot. The light is directly above him, which then illumicates the ground around him, the fact he's wearing mostly black keeps him in the darkness, the shadows.
This is a long shot of The Shadow's shadow on the ground. This shot is good as it has a mysterious look about it, which is something that movies within the paranormal/thriller genre consists of, such as Knowing, which holds a lot of mystery.
This is an extreme long shot of The Shadow standing under a street light in the distance. the street light is the main light source in this shot and holds the focus within the shot, all the attention is drawn in to The Shadow. The light source is also towards the centre of the shot, which also resembles importance and dominance within the shot.
This shot was supposed to show a long shot of The Shadow standing in the middle of the pavement looking towards the camera. This however didn't turn out as we hoped and we have identified why this was the case.

One of our scenes will involve a forest. To make the footage look professional we will need to film our forest scene in a real forest or an area with confined trees. The scene aims to capture an disequilibrium atmosphere where the audience become frightened. We thought at first to film this scene in the New Forest, this is because its the closest forest to Poole, however their isn't a direct train or bus that goes there, so the only mean for transport would be a car. Unfortunately we don't own a car or know somebody that would willingly drive us there for the day and back, so we will have to reconsider where to film the forest scene.

Luckily for us, quite close by is an area that contains forest like scenery, called uptown country park. This area hosts the famous Upton house, a georgian grade II house constructed in 1818. The park also hosts 100 acres of woodland, gardens and parkland. This gives us a good opportunity to explore around and to find the perfect scenery for our shot.

The website address is located here: http://www.uptoncountrypark.com/

We went to Upton country park and took some pictures of what we could use for our forest scene.

This photograph was taken at the side of the path following through the woods. This shot gives us an idea of the surrounding environment that we will be working around. It is very dark, which gives us an advantage at giving us a natural thriller like setting. Bearing this is mind we will need the audience to be able to see the characters, we will need to bring external light sources to enable the audience to see the characters.
This long shot of Jordan, acting out as Kennan hiding behind a tree looking to the left. This is aiming to capture the scene when Kennan is hiding from the Shadow in the forest. When it comes to filming the scene we won't be using this much light as this eliminates the disequilibrium with the presence of this amount of light. We will aim to use as little light a possible to try to aim to make it as natural and jumpy as possible. We will most likely be using a video camera that is capable at capturing good quality night video where you can clearly see the characters. In this photo we can clearly see both sides of the tree, which is what we aimed to capture in our planning. To make the scene more eerie we plan to place twig behind Kennan so as he turns around after looking around the other side of the tree and discovers The Shadow is gone, he steps on a twig and it breaks.
This is a behind the shoulder shot of Kennan looking towards the darkness in front of him. our mistake in this photograph is that the flash was taken of Kennan's back instead of the trees in front of him. This has taught us to place the camera forward when it comes to taking photos of whats in front of the subject.
This long shot of The Shadow in the trees, my choice in costume in this shot wasn't considered, when it comes to filming the scene i will be wearing dark clothing to make me look more scary and mysterious rather than bright and angelic. This shot was just to see how well The Shadow looks in the distance, more or less the long shot used. The long shot used is quite effective as we can see the entire character, which is effective in thriller type trailers as we feel safe. Once that character is taken away or disappeared, the audience will get stunned like and begin to worry. This is when we suddenly bring The Shadow into the audience gaze. This shot is more likely not to be used as it is too revealing, but we may implement this type of shot, but with less lightning.

This establishing shot was taken to experiment with composition and it works with the camera and what effect it gives to the audience. We have set the composition also bearing in mind the 'Rule of three'. In this photo there clearly is a left, centre and a right hand side of the shot. In the left and right side is a tree and a bush leaving a large empty gap in the middle. They all retain focus individually and have a unique feel about them. Bearing this in mind, this composition of objects in this frame is quite effective in capturing the audience attention. If we placed The Shadow in the centre of the frame, he would gain entire focus   from the audience, which is what we want, but we will have to bear in mind the costume, the miss en scene in particular.

This long shot of the tree was taken to get a look at what he background behind was like and would it be suitbale for The Shadow to walk behind. We found that behind the tree was think ivy, which would make the movements of the actor playing The Shadow quite difficult to move freely. This is a constraint, but we tehere are lenty of other trees we have found that we could use with plenty of space behind them.

This is a long shot of the path ahead of us leading deaper into the woods. This gave us a very good idea of the sort of level of light we may need to enable us to see the shadow on the camera. The aim is to even capture The Shadow as a dark figure moving, but with just darkness and a total blur the audience wont be able to work out whats happening on screen. Our eyes adjusted to the darkness pretty quickly, which enabled us to see where the characters where and the surroundings easier, but on the camera its just a total blurr. This will need to be considered when it comes to filming this scene.

Equipment we may need and constraints we face.
Because we will be filming outside we will need to take nessessary equipment to enable us to film with ease and combat the contraints and drawbacks that the outside enviornment offers when filming in. Some constraints include:
  • The rain
  • The darkness, the lack of light
  • The busy roads
  • The wind, which may rock the camera in our hands, which effects a steady shot

To combat these constriants we have to take nessessary actions and take out the right equipment for us to prepare for filming. The actions we will be taking include:

  • We will have to film early in the morning when it comes to filming the scene when the girl gets hit by the car. This is to combat the thought of other cars being in the road while we fill. We will need an empty road as the camera needs to be in the middle of the road. If there are other cars present this will be very diffucult and unsafe to film.

  • The main problem we face when it comes to filming in the darkness is the fact the cameras we will be using aren't professional enough to capture characters who are suspended in the dark. In other words the audience wont be able to see them on screen. We will need to take with us external light sources such as kinetic or battery powered torch.

  • The wind, which may be quite strong at times may force the camera to sway in our hands when we are filming, especially the forest scene, which is filmed near the sea front where strong wind is more likely to be present. To combat this we will need to take a tripod with us to keep the camera stationary at all times.

The character roles

Below I have a list of the characters that will be in the movie trailer. Once the characters have been outlined we will then need to find actors/ actresses who will then play the characters within the movie trailer. The characters are:

  • Kennan: Main character who possesses ability

  • Bolt and Zane: His two best mates

  • Reymond Knightly: Psychologist

  • The Shadow: The villain

  • Girl hit by the car

Actors/ Actresses profile

This is a list of the Actors/ Actresses who will star in our movie trailer. They will play the roles of the characters in our movie trailer. This is a powerpoint i made showing the actors/actresses we used in the movie trailer.

Costume

When it comes to filming our movie trailer, we will need to dress up our characters in an apporpriate costume to make them seem realistic, this will also make our shots look more proffessional to the audience. The different costumes that we will use will determine the overall look and feel about the character, it will be the first thing that the audience see on the character and will judge them based primarily on their costume, first impressions count.

Because all of our shots are based around kennan and his friends who are out and about, the costume will always be a casual look ,which would include jeans, t shirt and a jacket occasionally. The only time we needed to consider the costume to an extent was when it came to the shadow's scenes, we needed the shadow to look dark so we dressed myself up with a black jacket to add to the dark, mysterious look.

Scripting

Within our scenes that we film we will be including dialogue that the characters will speak within the clip. Here is a script of the dialogue that will be used in each scene.

Sound effects and the track within the movie trailer

Special effects

Were planning to use special effects in our trailer to emphasise scenes and make them look more realistic and this is how were going to go about it. After looking around on the internet i have found a website called VideoCopilot, which deals with distributing software that specialises in special effects and sound effects. Here is a link to their website

http://www.videocopilot.net/

I looked around their website and found that they offer free tutorials on how to create specific special effects for your movies Using Adobe After Effects. This log of tutorials luckily contains a few that will be useful within our  movie trailer.

There are three main special effects that we will need to focus on within our movie trailer to help capture a realistic effect. i have found three tutorials that will teach me how to create these special effects. They include:

1. The light steak coming from peoples chest and disappears as they move

This tutorial goes through the basic method used to create a light streak. This will be helpful when it comes to creating the light streak coming from peoples chests.

This tutorial will be useful to get us to get used to the method used and to enhance our knowledge of producing special effects.

This is my attempt at creating the light streak. It took around 2 hours to produce.

This tutorial had taught me a lot about creating light streaks and gave me a lot of tips to creating dynamic effects to make the light streak look visually appealing and attractive to he human eye. One tip I learnt was the ability to add a glow to the light streak. I could alter the glows intensity and radius, meaning how strong the glow is and how much glow is emitted from the streak. I also had the ability to change the colour of the light streak, which gave me the ability to customise the light to my needs and personality.

This tutorial extends on the previous light streak tutorial. Instead of ceasing a light streak on a dark background, this tutorial teaches you to overlay the streak onto live action footage, which is what we will need to do.

This is my attempt to overlay light streaks with live footage I've filmed. This took me around 2 and a half hours to produce.

One cool tip i found out when following the tutorial that could be useful was when it came to using the plugin, Trapcode Particular. This was how the particles that make up the light streak where created and assembled together. Using this plugin you could control and manage everything about the particles including how many there were, the size they were, the opacity of each particle, but most importantly, how long they lived for. This meant how long would the streak of particles go on for before the particles at the end began to disintegrate and follow down the streak of particles, dying off one by one. If i were to set the particles life for longer it would take longer for the particles to die, resulting in a longer light streak before the end of it began to erode and make the streak smaller.

When it comes to using this light streak on a characters body we could use this idea of a particles life to control when the particles die. We want the particles to die as the character moves forward to give it the look like the light streak is fading into their chest as if their eating away their own life line.

After learning about how to create the light streak it was now time to put this into practice with footage that uses a character and an environment outside. Below is a picture showing you the amount of detail that has to be put in to creating this effect. There isn't a tutorial that demonstrates exactly how to produce the effect where it disappears from Jordan's chest so i had to work that out myself. This effect was produced in Adobe After Effects CS6.

After looking at the light streak in more detail I felt that it didnt look very professional and looked quite cartoony and unrealistic. To combat this I looked around on After Effects for any other tool that i could use to create this effect. in the end i came to the conclusion that nothing was going to give the right effect that i desired. So I expanded my research and began to look onto different websites and forums to try and find a plugin suitable  enought to create a realistic light effect that I could use.

I came across a website called RedGiant after hearing about it on numerous forum sites such as Creativecow.com, and noticed that they deal with an extensive range of light techniques and include plugins. I purchased the plugins including Trapcode Particular and Trapcode Mir. They allowed me to experiment with light techniques and allowed to me to use them on top of footage i had already captured.

After already having used trapcode particular in previous projects i knew that this plugin would not be able to create the light effect that i desired. I then had the other plugin to experiment with called Trapcode Mir. I opened up After Effects CS6 and created a new composition and applied a solid to it. The composition is the base that the effects will be built upon and acts as the projects foundation layer. I then applied a solid to the composition and allow me to begin adding effects to the project and to begin building upon the composition layers. My aim is to create a light streak that looks realistic and natural. I then applied Trapcode Mir to my project.

This then applied the plugin, Trapcode Mir to my solid. Trapcode Mir's plugin settings popped up, which will then give me to the freedom to experiment with the plugin.

The next step was to start creating the light streak basic appearance, the shape in particular. I know in my head that the light streak will be long, which applying this to the geometry will mean expanding the X axis so the light will be longer on the X axis. I will now look upon the geometry of the shape and alter the size of the X axis to produce a longer appearance.

Now this is done i will now need to look at the deeper appearance and what makes the light streak look realistic and attractive to the human eye. This will involve applying colour to the shape and to alter the movement of the light streak, so as the clip progresses we can see clear alterations in the movements of the light streak. I applied a light blue colour as i thought that this colour represents a nice glowing, realistic effect and is a colour that can be seen in many movies to represent a light streak. To create this colour i went into the material section and applied the colour and altered the colour to light blue.

Now the light streak looks abit more natural and realistic i now need to place this onto of a scene from the movie trailer that me, Jordan and Josh have filmed.

As you can see from the screenshot above, the clip has shown up, however the light streak has faded. This is because the clip that i had imported has now overlaid on top of the light streak, in other words placed the light streak behind the clip so it is not visible. This is a common problem, but is easily resolved. You can see in the screenshot that the light streak clip has overlaid the black solid on the timeline, all we need to do is swap them around and the light streak will be visible above the clip, so they are both visible.

Now we can see the light streak above the clip, however it is a bit large, so i will need to make it smaller by simply reducing the size of the Y axis, by altering the Y axis section under the geometry section.

The light streak will need to appear like its emerging from someones chest, so we will need to move along the clip so we can see our actor Jordan in the clip and then to align the light streak with his chest.

Now the light streak is aligned with Jordan's chest, we can now begin to work on the details that will make the shot look professional.  The first thing we need to look at is the way the light streak moves, at the moment the light streak stays consistent as the clip evolves, i will now try to make the light streak move while the clip unravels. I will need to go to the Fractal section and find the part named Evolution, this once altered will change the appearance of the light streak, basically the waves are changed, the amplitude is altered to change the height and width of the waves.

Now we know how to change the physical appearance and movement of the light streak we can now apply this to change as time passes. We can set a keyframe at the beginning of the clip and at the end of the clip, which allows me to change the state and these changes are saved as time passes on the clip. I will press the times button next to evolution whilst the clip is at the beginning. I will then move the clip to the end and increase the value of evolution so the light streak changes. The result of setting the keyframes will record the exact changes and movements that are made to the light streak as time develops. This will result in the light streak moving and changing as the clip is playing. Here is a clip to show the changes in the light streak as time progresses.

We can see from the shot that the light streak doesn't emerge from Jordans chest, but actually overlays his entire body, this needs to be changed. To alter this we will need to first of all create a mask over the light streak. This will put entire emphasis on the light streak so any future edits will be entirely on the light streak.

Now the mask has been applied we now need a way to make the light streak disappear as Jordan walks. This can be done by applying a radial wipe to the light streak. The radial wipe basically allows me to make the desired object disappear, but i can control the speed and the angle that disappeared. In this case the light streak will disappear, i can also set the timer to control when the light streak disappears. This is great so i can make the light streak disappear as i walk into the scene to look like the light streak is coming from my chest.

2. The lightning striking down on the main guy on the football field.

This tutorial teaches you to produce a bolt of lightning that strikes somebody. This will be very useful when it comes to producing lightning that hits Kennan.

I followed this trailer to try and create a realistic lightning effect. I took a video of my street and applied the effects to this trailer. This took me about 2 hours to produce and proved to be very successful. This is the video before:

This is the edited version. I have applied many effects following the tutorial. Effects include creating a light rain, Creating ripples on the ground to show the rain fall, sky replacement, lightning and flashes. I feel these effects were created well and could be applied easily to our footage.

After looking closely at these lightning streak I feel like we can achieve a better effect if the lightning bolts were moving in a naturalistic way. Below is a tutorial of how to produce this effect. This was entirely done by experimenting with the After Effects software and I have followed no tutorials to learn how to create this.

add screen record 8 video here.

3. The sky change when the lightning appears.

This tutorial teaches you how to replace the sky that features in a moving shot. This will be useful when it comes to producing thunder clouds that give the lightning scene a realistic view.

You can only remove parts of the sky and not the entire sky.

This is an advanced tutorial of how to remove full skys using procedural mattes. This will allow us to remove the whole sky whereas in the previous tutorial you could only remove partial sky parts.

I followed the tutorial to create a sky replacement that replaces the light clouds to a dark sky atmosphere .This is the image i used to create the effect. Nothing has been changed or manipulate with this shot.

I also used this footage to replace the sky with.

This is the finished footage that i produced. This took about an hour to produce. I found this relatively easy to produce as i have gained a lot of experience over the last couple of days and didn't keep referring to the tutorial. I have only used a still image to replace the clouds in this final product.

This i felt was very successful, but in my movie trailer i will need to use live footage to make it look realistic. I have included live clouds to replace the sky to test out this method.

I felt this was very successful and could be used very well when it comes to replacing the sky in our football scene. I now have advanced on this and attempted to add lightning to this as well.

This i felt was very successful. The effect of creating a realistic lightning storm atmosphere has proven effective and can be used in our football scene.

4. Day to night conversion.

This tutorial teaches you how to edit the daytime footage and transform it into nightie footage. This eliminates the need to film at night, which requires  very expensive equipment. With this tutorial we can film in the day , but with the shots that we need to have been filmed at night, we can edit them into looking like they have been filmed at night.

After following the tutorial i have edited one of our videos we shot in the daytime and transformed it into a scene that looks like it was taken at night.

This is the before footage:

This is the footage after it was edited:

In order to perform these special effects I will need specific software and plugins, they include Adobe After Effects, Action essentials 2 plugin, Real Clouds plugin. After effects will be the base software in which the plugins are set with, I was able to purchase both software so i will be able to use them to create the special effects.

This is the Action Essentials package. This packaged soft are contains different video elements such as fire, explosions, dust elements, smoke, rain etc. They will come in handy when it comes to providing realistic atmospheres in our move trailer.

This is Adobe After effects, this will be the primary software that we will be using to create the special effects. After effects will play host to a vast variety of plugins, which will help with specific effects.

This plugin gives us the ability to replace clouds found in live footage with stock footage of clouds. This software is useful for people who require a specific atmosphere. For example if they required a thundery cloudy look, but on the day of filming it was sunny, this software will eliminate the need to waste time and wait for the day thunder arrives. This software helps to save time and creates a realistic look within the footage edited.

Sounds effects

Sound effects are the sounds that are included in the movie trailer that help to build up tension and create an atmosphere tailored to the scenes played at the time of the sound. The sounds used should work with the scene in the attempt to make it seem more alive and thrilling. The sounds make the trailer more exiting and add to the depth of how dramatic a scene is. These small changes will make all the difference in our movie trailer if they are allocated correctly and are placed with a purchase rather than to look pretty.

To get the sound effects desired we needed to look around to find a website that sells this type of sound effects package. Video Copilot provides a cinematic sound effect bundle called 'Designer Sound FX', which includes all the scores and sounds needed to create a proffessional looking movie trailer.

This software contains may different sound effects that can be used together to create thousands of different sound combinations, which will each have there own effect. We will need to experiment with the sound effects and see what ones work well together and which ones are worth avoiding. We will look at other movie trailers to see what sort of sounds effects are used and what effect they give.

Apps

Along with the software were going to use to create the special effects we are also going to consider other alternative methods to creating these effects. Since the introduction of the smartphone there have been an increasing number of apps developed by a number of companys that have specific functions, for example some apps are simply games to enjoy on a day to day basis, other apps allow simple photo manipulation and editing, and others I have discovered allow you to add special effects to exisitng footage. Since the purchase of my Apple Iphone I have been curious as to what the app store has to offer and have found numerous apps that allow a user to add special movie effects to exisitng footage. These are a few examples of apps that I have found that offer this feature:

1. Action Movie FX - https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/action-movie-fx/id489321253?mt=8

This app allows you to add Hollywood FX to footage you shoot from your iphone, Ipod or Ipad. They have preinstalled packages to use including, Car Smash, Demolition Rock, Rough Terrain, Missile Attack and loads more. Here are some examples of movies ive made using this app:

2. Extreme FX - https://itunes.apple.com/np/app/extreme-fx/id546262837?mt=8

This app is similar to Movie FX apart from the fact that its not as updated and doesnt contain many effects we will need, however this is a really cool app for adding effects such as gun fights, dinosaur stunts and loads more.
